Dealing with customers on a day to day basis can be extremely frustrating. Although the saying goes that the customer is always right, there are a lot of times when they can be wrong. How do you handle them without letting them get under your skin? One of the best techniques you can use is meditation. When you learn to meditate you learn how to be mindful. Mindfulness is the state of being aware of what is around you and directing your consciousness to manipulate a situation so that you can get a positive outcome.
If you are like most people, your mind has lots of thoughts flying through it at any one moment. You are wondering whether you are late to pick up the kids, whether you will finish the report on time, you are paying attention to what is happening on TV and all this at once. In this state, it is very easy to get irritated and frustrated if you encounter a customer who isn’t agreeable to what you are telling them. If they raise their voices or make demands they don’t deserve you could easily lose your temper and react negatively. Practicing mindfulness by learning to meditate gives you control in such a situation. You are able to detach yourself and assess the situation and then decide on what action you need to take to get the best outcome.
Mindfulness also helps you to empathize with your customers. You are able to step back and ask yourself why they are behaving the way they are. Have they just received some bad news? Do they have more responsibility than they can handle at home? Have they just lost someone they loved? Has their partner just told them that they are leaving them? As you ask yourself these questions you will find yourself calming down and looking for a better solution to their problem. This happens because you know that these are things that happen to everyone including your day. The customer may not be mindful but because you are you are you are able to diffuse the situation.
The same goes for your coworkers in the customer service department. Being mindful will help you get along better with them. When you notice, for instance, that they haven’t treated a customer very nicely, you can offer to take over ad assist them while they take a small break. What works even better is if you can get them to learn to meditate with you so that they can handle stressful situations in a better way. If all of you are mindful, you will treat your customers in such a way that they will want to come back; this, obviously, is what every business needs. Learn how to meditate and improve your relationship with your customers.
