How Mindfulness Can Help You Provide Better Customer Service
Working in a customer service department can sometimes be very challenging. Although there are customers who are nice, there are also lots of customers who are difficult to deal with. The good news is that there are things you can do to help you learn how to handle them, without letting them get under your skin. One of the things you can do is to learn how to meditate. Practicing meditation can help you learn how to become mindful. Mindfulness is about paying close attention to the people and things around you in the present moment. It’s about giving your mind freedom from other thoughts, and simply focusing your mind the here and now. This allows you to be in control of your situation, so you’ll be able to get positive results.
It’s common to have lots of different kinds of thoughts in your head. Like most people, you may be thinking about paying your bills, setting an appointment with your dentist, planning a vacation, and worrying about what to wear for an upcoming event at work, while answering an email and eating your breakfast all at the same time. Having all these thoughts in your head can make you vulnerable to losing your temper. If you’re in this particular state, and you encounter a difficult customer, then you’re more likely to react negatively.
Mindfulness can help you learn how to stay calm, focused and be in control of such a difficult situation. Mindfulness allows you to step back and give your situation a careful thought. This gives you the space you need to think clearly about how to act and what to say, in such a way that you’d still be able to maintain a healthy relationship with your customer.
Being mindful helps you become a little bit more understanding of your customers. For instance, if a customer suddenly raises his or her voice at you, rather than giving out a negative reaction, it’s better to simply listen and take the time to understand where you’re customer’s anger is coming from. Have your customer just received some bad news? Could they be having problems at home or at work? Are they going through some relationship problems? Taking the time to ask yourself these questions can somehow help you calm down and think of a better way to respond to your customer. Realize that your customer may not be mindful of their behavior, but you are. So, stay focused and be mindful of the way you’re serving your customer.
It can be a good idea to encourage your co-workers at the customer service department to also learn how to meditate. If all of you are practicing mindfulness, then you’ll all be able to serve your customers in such a way that will make them satisfied. Make an effort to find time each day to practice mindfulness. Keep in mind that with regular practice, you’ll be able to develop the skills you need to give out better quality of service to your customers.
